🐾 Building a Shelter, Together 🏡

A Shelter for Those Without a Voice 🐾

In La Serena, Fourth Region of Chile, we face a sad reality: many animals live in abandonment, with no safe place to receive love and care. Seeing them suffer pains us, and while we don’t have the necessary resources, we want to make a difference.

Our dream is to build a shelter where they can find a second chance. To achieve this, we need land, proper facilities, food, veterinary care, and much more. It’s a huge challenge, but we believe in the power of community and that every small action matters.

We believe in karma and dharma: every good action creates another good action. Helping these animals not only changes their lives but also creates a positive impact on the world.

🙏 Your support is essential to making this project a reality. Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to giving these animals a home. Together, we can make a difference. ❤️🐶🐱

In the Coquimbo Region, it is estimated that there are around 40,000 abandoned animals, including dogs and cats.

Of these, 7,400 are in La Serena, highlighting the scale of the issue in our community.

This alarming number emphasizes the urgent need to create a shelter that can provide care and attention to these animals.

Your support is essential to make this project a reality and improve the lives of many animals in need.

Pet abandonment in Chile remains a serious issue. Around three years ago, a study estimated that there were approximately 12.5 million dogs and cats with owners, while more than 4 million lived without supervision. This means that for every 2.4 owned dogs, there was one without a caretaker, and for every 7.1 owned cats, one was stray.

In 2023, the Brigade for Crimes Against Public Health and the Environment (Bridesma) of the PDI recorded 2,383 reports of pet abandonment or abuse. The Metropolitan Region led with 1,079 cases, followed by Valparaíso and La Araucanía. While these figures highlight a concerning situation, the increase in reports may also indicate greater public awareness and sensitivity toward animal welfare, as well as a higher willingness to report such acts.

The causes of pet abandonment in Chile are diverse. Some of the main reasons include unwanted litters due to a lack of sterilization, financial difficulties that prevent families from keeping their pets, changes in owners' living conditions, and a lack of education about responsible pet ownership.

To address this issue, it is crucial to promote public policies that encourage sterilization, education on responsible pet ownership, and the adoption of animals from shelters. Additionally, strengthening laws against animal abuse and abandonment is essential to ensure greater protection for pets.

Here are 10 tips to prevent pet abandonment:

  1. Think before adopting

    • Having a pet is a lifelong commitment. Make sure you have the time, space, and resources to care for them.
  2. Educate about responsible pet ownership

    • Share information on proper nutrition, vaccinations, exercise, and emotional needs of pets.
  3. Spay and neuter

    • Prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of abandoned animals on the streets.
  4. Don’t buy, adopt

    • Many animals in shelters are waiting for a home. Adoption saves lives.
  5. Don’t give pets as impulsive gifts

    • A pet is not a toy. Make sure the person is ready for the responsibility.
  6. Identify your pet

    • Use a tag with a name and phone number or a microchip so they can be returned if lost.
  7. Offer help instead of judging

    • If someone is considering abandoning their pet due to financial or personal issues, help them find alternatives like responsible adoption or support with food and care.
  8. Report abandonment and abuse

    • If you see a case of animal abandonment or mistreatment, report it to authorities or rescue organizations.
  9. Support shelters and rescuers

    • Donate food, money, or volunteer at shelters that help abandoned animals.
  10. Teach empathy to children and adults

  • Educating people from a young age about respect and care for animals helps build a more responsible society.
